Professional Development for Business English Teachers

Supporting Business English Students in Developing Good Research Habits

with Stephanie Ashford and Nathan Keeves English Language Teaching Unit, DHBW Villingen-Schwenningen

Program

For a Bachelor degree course at the DHBW, business students are expected to carry out research for term papers, project assignments and, ultimately, their Bachelor’s thesis. Yet the explicit teaching of academic research skills is confined to just two short modules. For many students, this is too little, too late. On the other hand, there is growing interest in the concept of Forschendes Lernen (learning through research), and in particular how to support students in developing good research habits.

As business English teachers in higher education, we also have a part to play. Indeed, the Business English curriculum, delivered using a task-based approach, may offer more opportunities to involve students in research than subjects taught in a traditional lecture format.

Using the five stages of the conventional research cycle as a starting point, the first part of this workshop presents a selection of activities that develop specific research skills. This is followed by a practical session where participants are invited to design their own research task plans on chosen topics, using a template that we provide. The output is then shared, and the workshop concludes with a review of the activities and a discussion of the wider teaching implications.
