Under the theme “Embracing Healthy Living”, this year’s International Staff Week took place at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST). From 3 to 7 November 2025, representatives of dual universities from across Europe came together to exchange innovative ideas in research and teaching related to healthy nutrition, physical activity, sport, and mental health & wellbeing.
The event was held for the first time within the framework of the EU4DUAL Alliance – the first European university alliance focused on dual education. Nine universities from across Europe collaborate within this network to strengthen dual higher education, promote international exchange, and develop joint research projects in the areas of Future of Work, Green Economy, and Healthy Living.
Professor Dr. Daniela Steenkamp represented DHBW Villingen-Schwenningen, where she heads the specialisation Network and Community Work at the Faculty of Social Work. She took the opportunity to explore the impressive MCAST campus – an architectural flagship designed as an inclusive campus. Steenkamp was particularly impressed by the Wellbeing Hub, a holistic centre for recreation, movement, and psychological support for students, as well as by the “I belong” programme, which supports students with a migration background in integrating into the campus community.
In addition to gaining insights into study programmes in the fields of sport, nursing, and social work, the week offered numerous opportunities for professional and personal exchange with colleagues from Finland, Hungary, Austria, and Portugal. These discussions resulted in valuable connections and ideas for future cooperation.
The cultural programme also played a key role, allowing participants to experience the richness of Maltese culture – a perfect combination of learning and discovery. The first results of this exchange are already emerging: Professor Steenkamp will participate in a Europe-wide research project led by Savonia University of Applied Sciences in Finland, focusing on trauma-informed educators and teaching methods in higher education.
