A city with two faces
Villingen-Schwenningen lies between the Black Forest and Baar at the source of the Neckar river.
With a population of 85,500, the city is the main centre of the Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg region.
A city founded by the Dukes of Zähringen, Villingen is characterised by its Minster and picturesque streets and can look back at a 1000 years as an urban centre with the right to hold a market, mint coins and impose customs. Schwenningen gained fame as a world centre of the watch industry. The cores of both city districts lie about five kilometres distant from each other.
On the one hand, Villingen-Schwenningen offers a broad spectrum of cultural attractions with its theatres, museums, the latest cinemas and the Franziskaner-Konzerthaus while, on the other, fans of fresh air and sporting pursuits of all kinds are sure to find activities that appeal to them.
Around 6000 hectares of municipal forest, green oases such as the Schwenninger Moos nature conservation area, the highest rose garden in Germany or the delightful green belt ensure that the air is pristine and offer an abundance of opportunities to escape your desk and enjoy the outdoors.
