In the field of work addressed by the study programme, it is necessary to engage in the sphere of life of people with mental health and addiction issues. An aptitude for working in teams consisting of different professional groups (physicians, psychologists, nursing personnel, therapists) is a key qualification. Moreover, in addition to within institutions, an ability to cooperate with other social services, the authorities and dependants must be demonstrated.

Contents of the study programme in brief

Theoretical knowledge, practical skills and the ability to form relationships are the basis upon which people in crisis situations, suffering from chronic illnesses or facing other profound changes in their lives can be supported. Networking of social services in health care promotes the help process through

  • orientation in daily life
  • support and assistance
  • case management


Specific knowledge and skills in dealing with persons with mental health and addiction issues are imparted in elective courses (e.g. interviewing techniques, an introduction to psychotherapeutic and sociotherapeutic procedures, supervision and relaxation techniques). Specialised studies address the special characteristics of the psychiatric and addiction care system and the duties of social work in this area in close cooperation with practices and institutions.
In addition, it is important to apply the strengths of one’s own personality in a considerate and regulated fashion. This requires personal direction and advice in the study programme.

This three-year study programme culminates in 210 ECTS points and the academic degree Bachelor of Arts.

Career following studies

Social workers in mental health and addiction assistance support and guide people suffering emotional distress in their daily lives. They procure material assistance, provide guidance on further treatment services and work in teams with physicians, psychologists and therapists.

This broad field of activities encompasses the promotion of self-help, working with dependants, social training, public representation, sociopolitical committee work, self-awareness, prevention and aftercare. Graduates of the study programme can embrace a varied field of activities in advice centres, psychiatric and addiction clinics, rehabilitation institutions, residential homes and workshops for the mentally ill, drug addicts or the homeless.
